Pulp fiber can be modified by Layer-by-Layer multilayering of polyelectrolyte. The properties of pulp fiber are affected by multilayering conditions including conductivity and pH of the aqueous solution. In this study, we evaluated the properties of handsheet made of multilayered fibers with polyelectrolytes at the different pH and conductivity. We made handsheets with using modified pulp fibers by multilayering with polyallylamine chloride and polyacrylic acid, and evaluated the bonding ability and structural properties. Bonding ability of fibers was improved remarkably by polyelectrolyte multilayering because of the increased electrostatic bonding between polycation and polyanion existed on the fiber surface which was visualized using by fluorescent dyes and confocal laser microscope. Outstanding increase of tensile index was observed at pH 10 when pulp fiber was treated by polyelectrolyte multilayering. Sheet thickness increased by 3% ~ 12% depending on the pH conditions at the conductivity of 520 μS/cm. Formation of paper was slightly deteriorated after polyelectrolytes multilayering.
