The WIC COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand) analyser is developed for monitoring the total or dissolved COD. In both applications, the method used exactly follows the ISO Standard 15705. The WIC COD analyser operates fully automatically, 24 hours per day, 7 days per week and produces on-line information about the COD. The analyser is capable of handling several sample lines and points. COD information is used either to control the process or to monitor the environmental impact of the process. There are references available in both applications. The most typical customer is a pulp and paper mill which wants to monitor the total amount of daily outgoing COD. Due to the analyser's structure and chemical method, results had excellent accuracy and correlated with laboratory tests. This is necessary to meet the environmental requirements set by local authorities. The continuous flow of COD allows for more careful monitoring of the process variations and sudden disturbances, compared with before. The reliable and accurate COD readings can be utilized with fast closed loop controls as well. This presentation will include some key design features, results and user-experiences from the first mill installations.
