Organofunctional silane modification and crosslinking of polymers is routinely applied in non-aqueous polymer systems. Silane crosslinked polymers can show improved water, solvent and weathering resistance. Waterborne (emulsion) polymers may also be silylated for improved performance, but precise control of the incorporation, hydrolysis and condensation of the silane is needed to make a useful silane containing material. Shelf-stable room temperature curable emulsion polymers have been prepared from vinyl functional silanes copolymerized with acrylic monomers. The conditions for polymerization and the solvent resistance of cured films cast from silane modified emulsion polymers are investigated.
