Construction Highlights and Lessons Learned Constructing Precast Concrete Segmental Viaducts of CA/T, I-90/I-93 Project

Four years ago, a paper was submittedand published (1) on the design aspects of the CentralArtery/Tunnel (CA/T) C09A4 Concrete Viaducts. Nowthat the construction is approaching completion, thedesigner reflects on the construction aspects of thiscomplex system of segmental concrete viaducts andparticularly the lessons learned. This paper isorganized in three parts as follows:Part I: Provides a brief description of the projectand the site, the superstructure, and the substructure(reference 1 provides the detail on these). Also thispart includes a brief description of the precastoperation, and erection method and sequence.Part II: Focuses on two innovative features usedspecifically on this project to improve project durationor to facilitate Segmental Viaduct construction namely;1. Precast Fixed (integral) Bent Segments, and 2.Precast Saw-cut segments.Part III: Presents several ‘lessons learned’ basedon the author’s experience and involvement on theproject from the conceptual phase through theconstruction.
