Comparative Study of Effective Flange Width Specifications for Composite Steel Bridges

Effective flange width provisions for composite steelbridge members are compared via review of AASHTOLRFD, British, Japanese, Canadian, and European Union(EU) specifications. The review brings to light several distinctunderlying philosophies and numerical comparisonsbetween the various effective flange width code formulations.Current research that may lead to revised effectiveflange width criteria is presented in this paper.
