A Study on Visual Responses of Daylighting Environments in Atrium Interiors

For the atrium design, it is necessary to evaluate the resident's responses on visual environment created by daylighting. This study aims to evaluate the daylighting performance of atria through the qualitative analysis by questionnaire surveys. For this purpose, a rectangular atrium model is selected through field surveys. And. The interior space of 1/25 scale model similar to real atrium is pictured based on glazing transmittance (100%, 80%, 30%) under clear sky conditions and questionnaire surveys are conducted by K university students in department of Architectural Engineering. The subjective responses on daylighting environment of atria interior are analyzed by SPSS WIN 8.0 program. Factor, variance, correlation and regression analyses are performed. The results are as follows: (1) three factors (pleasant, atmosphere, dynamic) were extracted. (2) Students took a good response to transmittance 80%. (3) In the overall, satisfaction of natural luminous environment has relation to friendliness, warmness, pleasantness and so on. (4) Factor 1 was mainly affected by brightness, Factor 2 by gentleness and Factor 3 by steadiness of daylight.
