Numerical Simulation of Airfoil Ice Accretion Phenomena

Methods for aero-thermodynamic modelling of airfoil ice accretion are presented. With support from andrncollaboration with NASA and the DoD’s Vertical Lift Research Center of Excellence, research teams atrnGeorgia Institute of Technology and The Pennsylvania State University have developed modern CFD toolsrnevolved from legacy icing models developed at NASA. These tools, based both on loosely and stronglyrncoupled approaches, employ requisite methods for mesh generation, compressible aerodynamic CFD of thernair flow, modeling of the kinematics, dynamics and thermodynamics of the droplets and liquid films, andrnthe freezing and growth of the ice shape itself. An overview of the tools is presented along with selectedrnvalidation studies. Advantages and shortcomings of the methods are discussed as are our teams’ prospectsrnfor the future.
