Based on their unique combination of properties (good corrosion and wear resistance, hardness, magnetic or non-magnetic properties) NiP coatings are used for many applications. Properties, such as abrasive wear resistance and hardness for NiP-SiC and NiP particle-free coatings with different phosphorous content are presented. A special lab scale set-up was designed to ensure reproducibility of the electroless NiP composite coatings and consequently of their properties. For a better understanding of the abrasive wear mechnanism of the NiP and NiP-SiC coatings, the worn surfaces and loose debris were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS).
