Reconstruction of the “Berolinahaus” in Berlin: Use-dominated structural design for construction in existing buildings

The Berolinahaus built in 1932 by the famous architect Peter Behrens located at the Alexanderplatzrnin the center of Berlin is one of the first reinforced concrete skeleton-frame structures ever and is thereforerna listed building. In order to fulfill the new demands on a shopping center, an innovative design is presented,rnwhich shows the doubling of the support grid in the lower floors, while the upper four floors and the foundationrnconstruction remain preserved in their entirety. In addition it is shown, how it was possible to preserve thernexisting structural framework with its, compared to the state of the art, inferior concrete qualities by making usernof system reserves, load reserves and material reserves without instigating extensive strengthening measures.rnThe complexity of the design and its application, while minimizing deformations, time and costs, is shown byrnambitious constructions based on a structural analysis in special construction phases.
