Probably the main challenge for new laser sources is to be accepted and exploited by industry. Of the many types and variants of lasers that are developed and described in the scientific literature, very few find more than niche applications. The purpose of this article is to summarise the acceptance of lasers for military applications and to identify reasons why lasers succeeded in displacing alternative technologies.
