The main advantage of anaerobic digestion of organic waste is biogas production bearing, however, the disadvantage of the need for high level monitoring of process parameters. In this work, an algorithmic procedure is presented for computer aided design of an anaerobic digester to cope with problems arising from (ⅰ) low biogas production and (ⅱ) high heterogeneity of the raw waste material, leading to difficulties in achieving/maintaining steady state conditions at optimal level. An implementation of this algorithmic procedure is also presented in the case of the anaerobic contact process (system with a cycle via a thickener/clarifier set in series with the bioreactor); the same software offers the possibility of running either complete models to obtain precise results for the sake of accuracy or simplified models to obtain approximate results for the sake of comparability with data produced under similar conditions and cited in technical literature.
