There has been great interest lately in automation issues, spurrednpartly by accidents and incidents attributed to automation factors, andnpartly by a recognition that automation related problems can be bothnhighly subtle and very dangerous. One of the reasons underlyingnautomation-related problems is the relatively indiscriminate applicationnof automation based on technological availability rather than operatornneed. This has placed system operators in roles that are poorly suitednto human capabilities. A more productive approach to automation andnhumans would recognize the need to maintain appropriate roles for thenhuman operator, the need to match automation functionality to operatorntasks, the need for the human interface to make automation functionsnhighly visible to the operator, and the potential for operator over- andnunder-reliance on the automation
