This paper will explore the links between framework structure and catalyst activity in toluene disproportionation (TDP) catalysis. The catalyst system that will be described is an intergrowth of framework types EUO and NES: designated NU-85. The paper will describe the crystallisation of a series of intergrowth "members", their characterisation by powder x-ray diffraction and (Transmission) Electron Microscopy and their use in TDP. It will be shown that activity in TDP, as measured by the temperature required to achieve a particular conversion, is directly proportional to specific features in the x-ray powder patterns that are related to the presence of increasing levels of the intergrowth structure.
