We investigated effect of polyelectrolyte multilayering (PEM) on ground calcium carbonate (GCC) to increase retention of GCC and strength of filled papers. It was expected that the PEM modified GCC was not only more attractive to fiber surface if the modified GCC had positive charge, but also more conformable. The PEM on GCC was conducted with cationic polyacrylamide (C-PAM) with different molecular weight and poly sodium 4-styrenesulfonate (PSS). The C-PAM and PSS were repeatedly adsorbed on GCC surface up to 3, 5, 7 layer where C-PAM was outmost layer. These modified GCC had positive charge due to C-PAM of outmost layer. The positively modified GCC was retained to fiber stock (eucalyptus BKP, 450 mL CSF) and filled papers were prepared to evaluate ash content and strength properties.
