Weather they are called MEMS, Micromachining, Top Down Nano or Microsystems this technology base forms a competency set that are known as Disruptive technologies. They have been referred to as the source of "The Winds of Creative Destruction" and as such are a key factor in the reallocation of wealth and jobs. Disruptive technologies redefine the competitive landscape in traditional industries and create new ones. So important has the Disruptive technology concept become that a whole academic and practitioner vocabulary has risen up to assist professionals trying to grasp and utilize disruptive technologies. Microsystems and Nanosystems have gotten much acclaim as potential disruptive technologies. Yet, people, firms, and industries do not embrace change easily, especially fundamental change brought on from sources such as disruptive technologies. As important as disruptive technologies are in any economic setting the term "Disruptive Technologies" or synonyms used to name these technologies such as Typhoon, or Tornado conjure the dark side of change - risk. The MANCEF roadmapping process is an example of a growing number of tools that are designed to assist the prudent manager or policy maker to overcome this risk with dealing with disruptive technology management. Roadmapping is a tool often employed by strategists and policymakers whose companies embrace a high-tech pathway as their source of competitive advantage. Technology roadmapping is seen as providing a more secure and structured pathway, a process that reduces risk and propels the industry. The technique would be exceptionally useful for a disruptive technology; yet until recently very little serious academic effort has been developed on the roadmapping process a disruptive technology would take. The over 70 authors of the MANCEF roadmap have utilized the growing body of knowledge to develop a paradigm for to embrace an industry wide disruptive technology roadmap by focusing on the fundamental differences between sustaining and disruptive technologies. This work highlights the efforts and problems of the first international roadmap process and the planed improvements to the second edition of the international roadmap.
