The Globalization Research Network Data Portal Project: A Library-Scholarly Community Partnership

The creation of the Globalization Portal (GP) is intended to begin solving the challenge of helping to better understand an interdependent world and how to respond to it by forming a partnership among globalization researchers, libraries and information technology experts, who together will establish an electronic site where globalization researchers can access, identify, evaluate, use, and enhance a wide range of globalization resources. A state-of-the-art web database system will provide open access to catalogued resources and powerful new search and display tools to support interpretation of globalization materials. Information was organized in a relational database employing Microsoft SQL 2000 Database. The GP relies on Macromedia ColdFusion to search and display globalization resource data in logical and meaningful ways. In addition to searches across multiple, indexed queries, the user may select a full-text search feature. Search facilities will exploit the classification schema to permit powerful searching and browsing of content. The search and display interface for the data portal will allow for substantial customization. GIS mapping software will permit construction of map views of globalization data and relationships.
