Verbal and Non-Verbal Behaviors in Multi-Party Interaction: an Analysis of Leadership and Teamwork

Introduction: This research reveals the behavioral factors involved in achieving tasks through group work by focusing on a distributed cognitive environment. We examine the differences in verbal and nonverbal behaviors, especially distance, between successful and unsuccessful cases of multi party interaction. A preliminary experiment was conducted on the task of assembling a large structure in a shared physical space while checking a picture of the completed structure. Distance, gaze and speech were analyzed for two groups. The results suggest that both communication oriented speech and interpersonal distance play important roles in facilitating leadership and teamwork in triad interaction.
