Primary study on mycobacterial strains depending on rifampin isolated from paients of tuberculosis

Twenty two rifampin-depending strains (rds) from the patients of tuberculosis were identified based on their vigorous growth in the media containing rifampin. All rifampin-depending strains in this study were identified to be Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Their dependence of rifampin was limited by rifampin concentration (50 approx 600ug/ml) and most of them grew vigorously in 100 approx 300 ug/ml rifampin, suggesting the rifampin dependence is relative. The colonies of rds in the media containing rifampin were significantly larger and rougher than their colonies in media not containing rifampin, indicating their higher virulence in the rifampin-treatment. Our study indicates that rifampin-treatment of the patients infected by rds may worsen their conditions.
