Remediation of SO2/NOx Pollution by Corona Non-thermal Plasma Technologies

SO2 and NOx emission has critical effect on public health through respiratory damage and urban environment through acidification, smog, etc, so it is very important to restrain the rising SO2/NOx emission. In general, SO2 and NOx are simultaneously generated from the combustion of fossil fuels (mainly coal), while the conventional technologies including wet limestonegypsum deSO2 process and selective catalytic reduction deNOx process do not hold the ability of simultaneous removal of SO2 and NOx. In recent years, pulsed corona plasma has been attempted to treat boiler flue gas and has demonstrated its effectiveness in removal of both SO2 and NOx, but reduction of the energy consumption should be further studied. In order to enhance the production of deNOx/deSO2 radicals, therefore increase the purifying efficiency of flue gas and reduce the energy consumption, an improved wire-toplate type pulse corona plasma reactor was devised. Experimental results show that the improved plasma reactor presented a better performance in simultaneous removal of SO2 and NOx than the conventional one. Comparing with the conventional wire-to-plate type reactor, SO2/NOx removal rate could be increased over 10%, and the removal rate of NOx and SO2 reached over 55% and 85% respectively under a specific input energy lower than 2.1 Wh m3.
