摘要

The development of a microstructural severity rating system to improve the development of a direct-drive friction weld process for joining low carbon steel components is described. The severity rating system is a quantitative rating system, developed by establishing a correlation between weld bond-line microstructure and static weld strength. Knowledge of mechanisms leading to the formation of bond-line microstructures also played a key role in the severity rating system development. The severity rating system provides an improved response variable to Design of Experiment (DOE) studies by improving the resolution of the predicted weld integrity when compared to typical mechanical response testing.
