摘要

Though there has been a mass of the critical studies on the architectural study drawings, there seems to have been few examples of analysis on dynamic mechanisms of figural transformations shown in their drawing processes: the mechanisms with which develop the drawings of actual design processes. The authors focus on the latter dynamic approach, and try to verify that it is the geometrical form that play central role in the dynamic mechanisms of figural transformation in design process. The aim of this paper is to show that designers do not start and develop their design processes with drawings of utterly free-lines, but start them by 'reading' the geometrical structure of the given drawing(s), and that the development of their drawings are triggered by the geometry they extracted from what they have read at any moment, once they are given specific geometrical design constraints: the constraints that, sooner or later, always happen to influence the designer in actual design situations. For the purpose, first of all, we report the results of quasi-experimental observation on 32 architectural students' design processes. Then, proceed to the Shape Division Test conducted on 124 undergraduates, in order to examine whether the division of space in the first observation is influenced by the perception of figural characteristics outlined through Shape Division Test. The paper discusses that, though most of the subjects tried some different configurations, they seem to pick up and maintain specific lines on their drawings which seem to emphasize the structure of 2D geometry given as constraints.
