This research centers on problems that occur when introducing computers for teaching graphic sciences in elementary-school level arithmetic. Problem points that occur when using software teaching material for elementary school education are first studied by focusing on the relation of the child's thinking development stage and the conditions required of the teaching material. Next, the various problems that occur when a teacher, not necessarily computer-literate, must operate and control the computer. Finally, we show that these problems can be eased and resolved by using Java to prepare the software teaching material. The learning of the flat pattern development of solids is used as a basis for preparing the teaching material. When actually using the teaching material, materials to help the student become used to the two-dimensional representation of solids are first issued. Thereafter, teaching materials for learing the flat pattern development of solids are issued. These teaching materials allow the student to recognize the object on the display by handling a mouse to rotate the cube, translate the cube and to move the cube around freely.
