The lack of students going to university to study sciences and space related subjects is a worrying problem that must be skilfully and seriously addressed by governments and space agencies worldwide. Cinematography is suggested in order to reach a large audience and promote science in an exciting and inspiring way. Space has been used in movies for a long time, but have such films really been conducive in motivating people about space? The use of space in movies needs to be approached carefully so as to educate and inspire people about space but not damage its reputation. This paper considers the most effective way in which space can be used in films, with the end product being the attraction of youngsters to study science and engineering at university so as to work in the space sector after graduation. Screening films about what is happening in space at present is seen as crucial since this offers an excellent representation of the space sector, not just a historical overview or an unrealistic movie set too far into the future. Movies should be exciting while remaining technically accurate and realistic.
