Though the harmonization of European Union (EU) product safety regulations (CENELEC) has made entry into EU markets somewhat easier for North American manufacturers, there are many potential pitfalls. It is essential to be aware throughout the product design process of all applicable regulations as well as necessary testing and certification. Unfortunately, it is all too common for finished product that isn't fully compliant to arrive in an EU country - a costly mistake. This paper presents a brief summary of broadly applicable standards and a "top ten" list of the areas most likely to cause EU compliance problems for North American appliance manufacturers.
