ENHANCING INTERNATIONAL MULTI-ARCHITECT COLLABORATIVE BUILDING PROJECTS THROUGH ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN MANAGEMENT

Large multi-function urban projects have been arising in the Netherlands as well as in other countries. Due to the global economy, these projects are expected to meet an additional demand to present top architectural quality for international recognition as representative business centers. Besides, they have to deal with the escalating complexity in building requirements as well as the increasing number of stakeholders and specializations in design team. To create the design that fulfils those purposes, highly qualified international architects are invited to work collaboratively in a multi-discipline design team. In the first section, this paper will review recent multi-architect projects. It will directly link to the practice in order to recognize the core of the problems, and explain why the current management for design process based on conventional project management is inadequate. In the second part, architectural design management will be introduced. The essence and the approach will be discussed to propose enhancement of the multi-architect projects. Finally, the conclusion section will critically appraise the potential and weaknesses of current architectural design management. Recommendations will be given towards a research for a coherent design management framework.
