Productivity Increase and Quality Improvement on Slab Casting at ArcelorMittal in Latin America

AMLC and AMT are major suppliers of slabs to the world market for rolling to strips and plates. By using the continuous improvement methodology in the production processes, preventive maintenance philosophy and the latest state-of-the-art technology, both plants have increased their production to a much higher level than the nominal designed capacity of its slab casters. The customer base and quality issues, such as slivers and scabs on hot rolled, cold rolled and galvanized steel, broken slabs, corner cracks and centerline segregation on as-cast slabs for API and plate applications, are very similar for both plants. This paper describes the main features that have been implemented at the steelmaking and casting areas to increase the shop productivity and, at the same time, improve the steel quality to meet the increasingly stringent demands from our customers.
