The surface of continuous castings develop in the mold of a continuous caster and thermal conditions at the meniscus of a continuous caster determine the solidification structure that can be observed. Thus the complex interaction of fluid flow, heat transfer and alloy solidification behavior is responsible for the surface quality of continuous cast slabs. In this paper, some of the fundamental issues of meniscus solidification in a caster mold will be discussed and the necessary condition for the formation of oscillation marks outlined.
