The productivity of slab casters needs to catch up, with minimum numbers of strands, basic oxygen furnaces and hot rolling mills to streamline plant integration with minimized investment and maintenance. Developments have been made in hardware and software to increase the productivity by maximizing metal-in-mold time and casting speed without impairing the qualities of cast strands. Among the significant progresses achieved in the last decades, some have found universal validity, while others were effective only under specific conditions. A critical examination of the progresses reveals core technologies that have stood against the trial of time and place. A perspective of the development of slab casting technology will be presented on the basis of the examination.
