Multiphase Flow Modeling and Its Application Potentials in Steel Continuous Casting

With the increasing capacity of the computation resources, a new discipline, called computational multi-fluid dynamics (CMFD), is becoming more and more actively involved in the research and development activities of metallurgical processes. This paper gives a brief overview of the general CMFD approaches, and presents some numerical modeling examples applied in the continuous casting (CC) process. These are: (1) using a mixture (enthalpy-based) solidification model to predict the evolution of the solid shell;(2) using Eulerian-Lagrange method to track non-metallic inclusions;(3) using an Euler-Euler two phase model to study the formation mechanisms of macrosegregation. Finally the potentials and the limitations of the current models and hardware resources are discussed.
