A novel additive, derivative of benzothiazol, 2-(1,3-Benzothiazol-2-ylamino)-2-Oxoethyl dibutyl dithiocarbamate, is synthesized as an environmentally friendly additive for rapeseed oils. Its tribological performance is investigated using a four-ball test machine. Results indicate that there is an improvement in the load-carrying capacity, anti-wear performance and friction reduction when adding this additive into a rapeseed base oil. Scanning electron microscopy presents a dominated mechanism of the normal abrasive wear when using the rapeseed oil with 2% of this novel additive where a dominated mechanism of ploughing wear: deep grooves, on the worn surfaces when using the rapeseed base oil. Examination by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) shows the formation of a boundary lubricating film on worn surfaces by adding the additive, which is attributed to the chemisorption and/or tribochemical reactions between triester of rapeseed base oil, organic sulphur compound and sulphate. This boundary lubricating film plays one of the most important roles in improving the tribological properties of the rapeseed base oils.
