摘要

An experimental study of the tribological tool-chip interfacial interactions and the corresponding correlations with chip morphology in 3-D cyclic chip formation with grooved tools is presented in this paper. The chip flow and the subsequent chip curl mechanisms are strongly influenced by the geometry and features of the grooved tool as well as the frictional interactions between the tool and the chip. The effect of tool-chip interfacial tribological behavior on 3-D chip curl and breaking is addressed by assessing the deformation at the tool-chip interface using metallographic methods. The issue of variable contact on the complex 3-D tool surface and its importance on chip morphology is also discussed.
