In recent days a question has been raised in the Chinese circle of foreign languages as to whether foreign language teaching should be instrumentality-oriented or humanity oriented. This paper is intended to pose an argument for humanity orientation in teaching foreign languages. Starting from this point, it proposes that reading and writing should be primary in foreign language teaching in China.
