The size distribution of rock lumps in blasting muckpile is an important index to evaluate the blasting parameters in open pit mines and has a direct influence on the efficiency of the follow-up working procedures. In order to find out a measuring method of rock lump size distribution with low cost, high efficiency and sufficient precision for engineering purpose, a photo measuring and picture processing method is attempted. A calculation method called "surface area method" is derived, by which the size distribution of rock lumps in the muckpile can be fairly reflected by the surface area of rock lumps on the pictures. Several muckpiles with different size distribution were tested manually by this method with digitizer. To raise the measuring speed and efficiency, a computer picture processing model was developed, the pictures were input to the computer by scanner, and then a series of picture processing were done automatically.
