Remotely sensed data from satellite or airborne platforms of land and searnsurfaces in the visible and near-infrared bands are strongly affected due to the presence of thernatmosphere along the path from the sun to target to sensor. In order to obtain accurate andrncomparable data, it is necessary to eliminate atmospheric distortion. Correction using radiativerntransfer models is one of effective methods in the atmospheric corrections. This paper presentedrnthe difference between MODTRAN model and 6S model on their theories, applicable areas andrnusages etc. Then the two models were used to correct AVHRR imagery and ground truthrnreflectance data were used to compare and verify their results. The two results were close. Beingrnconsidered the scattering and absorption of the atmospheric substances, both eliminated therninfluence of the transmittance and downward radiance. The results proved that both wererneffective: atmospherically corrected reflectance was closer to ground measured data andrnatmospheric corrected imagery was clearer. Comparatively, 6S model is easier and morernconvenient to use.
