The region of Navarra in Spain has important agriculture and agro-industrial outputs that can be usedrnas feedstocks in a biorefinery. For this reason, several research organizations (1) have joined efforts to carry out arnproject for the definition of a biorefinery concept for the Navarra region. The project is divided in three workpackages:rnWP1-Feedstocks, WP2-Conversion processes and WP3-Biorefinery concept design. Within WP2, anrnevaluation of several conversion processes is being carried out. In this context, pretreatment assays using cereal strawrnas feedstock under diverse conditions (temperature, residence time and acid) have given a broad amount of slurriesrnwith high variability regarding its carbohydrate composition and their prone for enzymatic digestibility. These resultsrnhave been used to correlate two important parameters when designing a biorefinery process, xylose concentrationrnafter pretreatment and glucan to glucose conversion yield after enzymatic hydrolysis. Both correlation formulasrnshowed relative high values of R~2 (> 0.87) assuring the precision of the predictions and becoming a useful tool for arnbiorefinery plant design.
