Scandinavian NO-DIG Handbook. A new reference book and teaching material for Trenchless Technology

Trenchless technology had its 25 years jubilee in the beginning of the new millennium.rnIn Scandinavia many systems and methods have been introduced and most of them have been used andrnare still in use. Today, there is no doubt that trenchless technology has its foundation, especially due to thernhigh quality demands and the long lifetime of the systems.rnHowever, in Scandinavia there has been a lack of a systematic collection and dissemination of know-howrnwithin the NO-DIG area. There is no education within the area and there is no overall material describingrntrenchless technology and the potential use of the technology.rnScandinavian Society for Trenchless Technology (SSTT) was established in order to encourage researchrnand development and disseminate information on trenchless technology. Based on this, SSTT decided inrn2001 to initiate creation of a NO-DIG Handbook.rnCreation and production of the Handbook is mainly financed by SSTT itself but also institutions, pipe ownersrnand contractors have made financial contributions to the work.rnIn general the Handbook should be created in a form making it useful both as a reference book and asrnteaching material. The idea of the Handbook is to collect all existing knowledge within the area and makernthis information available and useful for everyone working with operation and maintenance of pipe systems.rnIn addition to this, the material should be created in a form suitable for institutions and universities, herebyrnallowing them to focus on Trenchless technology as alternatives to traditional rehabilitation and installationrnmethods.rnThe Handbook is divided in main paragraphs comprisingrnPlanning and Planning ToolsrnTrenchless MethodsrnMaterials, Standards and Control SchemesrnThe NO-DIG Handbook has been published in 4 languages — Swedish, Norwegian, Danish and English.rnThe unique thing about SSTT, as an interdisciplinary forum, has shown its potential as personnel from pipernowners, manufacturers, consultants and contractors have worked closely together during the process ofrncreating the Handbook.rnIt is expected that the Handbook will be the reference book for the NO-DIG sector in Scandinavia and willrnfurther be disseminated also outside Scandinavia, as there is a common lack of such material.
