Noise pollution, in particular road traffic noise, is a growing concern. In general, noise reduction can be achieved at the source of noise emission, or by using anti-propagation or insulation measures. Measures at source are often the cheapest approach. This paper contributes to the development of enhanced environmentally-friendly vehicles by proposing an effective tire/road interaction noise mitigation method based on Active Noise Control (ANC). ANC methods can reduce the noise directly at the tires/road contact points by installing actuators (i. e. loudspeakers) inside the vehicle fenders. The proposed method will also reduce the noise propagating inside the vehicle and will hence eliminate the needs for passive noise reduction measures. As a result, the weight of the vehicles can significantly be reduced, thus requiring less resources for production and leading to an efficient fuel consumption during operation.
