In this paper we develop a throughput model for a common order-picking system: a carousel pod with a humanrnorder-picker. The primary advantage of using carousels over static shelving is that much of the walking timernassociated with static shelving is removed since the carousels bring the items to the order pickers. Multiple carouselsrnare typically grouped together in what are called pods to ensure that the order-picker does not have to wait on therncarousel while it is rotating. Carousel pods are used in many order fulfillment centers where high throughput isrnneeded. We develop our model for a pod size of two carousels.
