Most of the currently popular neural models of associative memoryignore nontrivial temporal processes in neural elements. Suchnontemporal models describe interesting effects of spatial cooperationbut do not address the problem of temporal coordination and temporalcontext. Effects such as temporal association, short-term memory, andmental set can be represented naturally in neural models by introducingstates of residual excitation (E-states) in the neural elements. Onesuch model illustrating the E-state concept is discussed
