Structural Health Monitoring of civil structures requires selection and placement of sensors suitable for measurement of key parameters that influence the performance and health of the structural system. Civil structures pose challenges in monitoring mainly due to their large dimensions, diversity as well as heterogeneity of materials involved, and hostile construction environment. Other issues involve proper configuring of sensors for sensing parameters of relevance, i.e. cracks, forces, corrosion, deflections, etc. This article focuses on several distributed and multiplexing methodologies for structural health monitoring with fiber optic sensors. It includes use of long gauge interferometric sensors, Bragg gratings, and fiber optic acoustic emission sensors for detection of structural damage and anomalies such as cracking in concrete, formation of hinge in columns subjected seismic loadings and splintering of fibers in composites and fracturing of welds and connections. Representative examples will be introduced and described.
