摘要

The authors investigate the distribution of the medullary processes (the branches of cerebral white matter) which protrude from the cerebral medulla (white matter) on computed tomographic (CT) images and the corresponding transverse anatomic sections of the brain. The results show that the medullary processes which protrude from the cerebral medulla can be distinguished from other cerebral structures on both of them, and the distal end of medullary processes always corresponds to certain areas of the cerebral cortex. The functional areas of the cerebral cortex could be confirmed by tracing the medullary processes on CT images. The primary motor area, the primary somesthetic area, the language area, the visual area, the auditory area and the visceral regulating center were identified by tracing their corresponding medullary processes. This new method to identify the functional areas of the cerebral cortex may be used in CT, magnetic resonance image (MRI) and other image diagnosis.
