Software versus Systems Engineering, is there a difference?

The topic for this paper is the question: should software engineering be considered a discipline of its own or is it identical to systems engineering. As software is becoming more and more important for systems this question becomes relevant as it addresses the approach towards software by the systems engineering community. This paper proposes to divide what is commonly called software engineering in two disciplines;rnA specialty engineering disciplinernA systems engineering disciplinernThe paper suggests the systems engineering discipline within software engineering to be identical to "normal" systems engineering. And supportive material is provided to support this statement.
