Developing of Safety Education Program for Injury Prevention in Elementary School Environment

School safety, especially school playground safety, is an urgent issue in Japan. A safety education program was developed as a new method for risk communication. In this program, schoolchildren actively tackle the problem of school safety, and injuries in the elementary school environment are controlled through education. To develop the program, data on “Fun” and “Danger” that schoolchildren feel on the elementary school playground were collected, and the degree of “Fun” and “Danger” was evaluated by using the Thurstone's method of paired comparisons. We demonstrated that the perceptions of “Fun” and “Danger” were varied across different grades, and differed between schoolchildren and their teachers. The result will be useful in developing the required safety education.
