The European Youth Heart Survey (EYHS): An International Study that Addresses the Multi-Dimensional Issues of CVD Risk Factors

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of morbidity and morla- lity in Western, industrialized countries and has a major socio-economic impact. A number of epidemiological studies indicate that chronic diseases of adulthood have their origin in childhood lifestyle habits. There is considerable evidence that risk factors for CVD track from childhood into adulthood but there is limited information on the major factors influencing CVD risk. The aim of this paper is to briefly describe an international study that uses a multi-dimensional approach addressing CVD risk factor in children and adolescents with emphasis on the dietary component and validation. The European Youth Heart Survey (EYHS) focuses on CVD risk factors in children and adolescents by studying the nature, strength and interaction between personal, environmental and lifestyle influences in a large population of children of differing age, gender, culture and ethnicity. It is a cross-sectional study currently ongoing in Denmark (Odense), Sweden (Stockholm and Oere-bro), Norway (Oslo), Portugal (Madeira) and Estonia (Tartu).
