Frequent bottlenecks of traffic due to increase in traffic day by day and shortage of availability of ground space especially in cities has been leading to adoption of elevated roads as a solution. Every site identified for provision of elevated road has environmental features of its own. The detailed data of environmental features such as movements of traffic, architectural features, sub-soil strata characteristics, existing overground and underground service lines of electric cables, water and sewerage pipelines, telephone lines etc. are compiled by physical as well as topographical surveys and geo-tecnnical investigations. The ingenuity of civil engineers in developing countries like India then lies in choosing a befitting structural system and construction scheme of the elevated road which is cost effective, causes least disturbances to traffic, achieves speedy construction, is durable with minimum in-service maintenance and is at the same time environmentally compatible.
