The development of distance education and digital libraries in china

Distance education via network has developed in some areas of China. Several universities, such as Tsinghua University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University, have begun the study and practice of distance education since five years ago. In 1998, the Ministry of Education of China authorized Tsinghua University, Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, Zhejiang University and Hunan University to make experiments in distance education for the first time. In August 1999, Peking University and Central Radio and Television University became the experimental universities too. It was last year that the distance education had made a great advance in China. There were 31 universities approved to conduct distance education. According to the latest statistics data of the Ministry of Education, these universities have taken in about 190,000 registered students since 1998.
