A novel gallium complex, bis(salicylidene-o-aminophenolato)-bis(8-quinolinoat o)-bisgallium(lll)(Ga2(saph)_2q_2), has been synthesized and structurally characterized as a binuclear complex with two tridentate ligands of schiff base. This complex proves to be of electron mobility and extremely high luminescent efficiency. Organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) have been fabricated with Ga_2(saph)_2q_2 as the emitter and the host respectively. When it was used as the host material for red-dopant cell, saturated red light was obtained with the maximum luminance of 7260cd/m~2 at 21V. The Commission Internationale de I'Eclairage chromaticity coordinates for the red emission are (0.67,0.33), and the turn-on voltage is as low as 2.2V. The experimental results show that Ga_2(saph)_2q_2 is a promising electroluminescent material, especially as the host material of red OLEDs.
