Observations of Mould Dimensional Changes During Gelling in the Ceramic Mould Process

Variations in dimension of moulds used in the ceramic mould casting process have been studied under various conditions using a specially designed apparatus. Very significant differences were observed in the characteristics of dimension changes after the stripping of the pattern between specimens left in air and those immersed in alcohol. Several unique phenomena have been observed. Based on the experimental observations, reasons for the beneficial effects of the Unicast stabilisation treatment and other practical application experiences are discussed. Implications of these findings to foundry practices are also pointed out.
