Morphing techniques for images and those for speech sound have been developed, but those for musical performances have not been even studied yet though morphing of musical sounds has been reported. If a method for describing the features of playing the piano is developed, not only morphing but also feature exaggeration in playing the piano is expected to be easily realized by manipulating the extracted performance parameters. This paper aims at realizing a feature exaggeration system for basic piano performance. The proposed system generates simulated performances by manipulating the extracted performance parameters. All parameters are made controllable on the screen with slider bars from 0% up to 200% for synthesizing from suppressed to exaggerated performance, where 100% represents the original performance. Features of skilled and unskilled performances on the piano can be emphasized using the proposed method. For example, deviation from neutral performance is emphasized to be apparent in case of skilled performance, while defects or peculiarity come to be obvious in case of unskilled performance. The proposed system not only can interpolate between actual performance and metronomic performance but also can exaggerate the features of the input performance by specifying the degree of features ranging from 0 to 200% assuming that 100% corresponds to the input performance. The proposed system is expected to be useful for self-training of piano, as it can show undesirable habits of the player in an exaggerated form by setting the control parameters to be over 100%.
