Analysis on Snowfall Processes Observed by Radar and Aircraft over the Changbaishan Mountains

摘要

To investigate the variations of precipitation in Changbaishan mountains, and find out the relationship between clouds microphysical and precipitation, the field observational experiments were performed jointly by aircraft and radar in 2009 and 2010 in this region. In this paper snow size distribution (SSD) and the particle types in Changbaishan mountainous area are analyzed on the basis of observational snow particle size spectra data obtained by particle measuring systems (PMS) which are mounted in the aircraft and C-band radar data collected by Baishan station on 7 Feb 2009. The results suggest that the Γ distribution of snow size is better than the Marshall-Palmer (M-P) one. The number concentration of snow particles in the upper levels is smaller than that in the lower levels. However, the average diameters of the particles in the upper levels are lager than those in the lower levels. This is perhaps the consequence of snow particles split during the particles’ falling down to the ground. According to the comparison of reflectivity measured by radar and retrieved by SSD from three assumed types of ice or snow particles, the snow particles with loose or medium density may be the main types in winter in this area. The further analysis by using the observations of the two snowfall processes in 2010 shows that the radar-estimated snow flux calculated by the stratiform Z-R relationship with effective reflectivity could achieve better precisions.
